The main focus of the University Children's Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf is to offer medical care to patients with complex and rare diseases. However, for many of these patients there are either no or only insufficiently effective therapies available. Therefore, to improve medical care in such cases, the Pediatric University Center for innovative Therapies (ped.UCiT@Kinder-UKE) was founded.

The main aim of the center is to guarantee the availability of already approved, demanding therapeutic methods to broad numbers of patients and to promote the development of new therapeutic approaches by example in a form of clinical trials.

Taking into account that patients, parents and their respective advocacy groups are experts regarding specific diseases, the ped.UCiT aims to emphasize close cooperation of scientists and medical professionals with the members of the ped.UCiT advocacy board. This cooperation ensures patient involvement in clinical trial design (eg. relevant endpoints, practical aspects), patient information, and consent processes as well as in the communication of trial results.
